These are my top picks for 2018! Out of everything I read these are the ones that stood out to me, and are in no particular order.
His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik – Goodreads – I adore dragons in general, but dragons that act a bit like cats and are fighting the Napoleonic Wars? There is just too much goodness in that to pass up, and it did not disappoint.
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers – Goodreads -This took me by surprise as I’m not big on character-driven books, but this was just so charming and thought-provoking.
The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud – Goodreads –I read this on a recommendation from La La in the Library and it was fantastic! I adore the writing style and Bartimaeus’ sarcasm.
Delicious in Dungeon Vol. 1 (Purchased) The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin (Library)
Delicious in Dungeon Vol. 1 –Goodreads – I saw this on Litsy in passing and knew I had to have it! A manga that focuses on food made from classic dungeon monsters, that the rest of the group is not entirely on board for. It’s charming and hilarious.
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin –Goodreads – This was a book club pick and it was so good! It’s written a bit oddly, but it really pulled me in and basically held my emotions hostage the entire time.
Contact by Carl Sagan – Goodreads – I adore first contact books, and as a Carl Sagan ‘fan’ I wanted to try out his sole fiction novel. It did not disappoint at all. I was completely hooked and this is probably my favorite read of the year.
All Systems Red by Martha Wells (Purchased) Bloodline by Claudia Gray (Purchased) Golden Son by Pierce Brown (Purchased)
All Systems Red by Martha Wells – Goodreads – This novella was so much fun! I adore Murderbot and their binge watching, antisocial ways because I see myself in them.
Bloodline by Claudia Gray – Goodreads – I am fairly certain at this point that Claudia Gray needs to write the vast majority of the SW books. This focuses on Leia as she navigates politics yet again but this time everyone finds out her connection to Vader. Leia is an absolutely badass as usual.
Golden Son by Pierce Brown – Goodreads – I loved Red Rising, and Golden Son did not disappoint. I don’t think much could top some of the scenes in the first book, but this one was just as enjoyable.
Smoke and Iron by Rachel Caine – Goodreads – I binge read this series earlier this year (this is book 4), which is something I do not do but it had one of my favorite aspects of history in it. The Library of Alexandria and it’s thriving, for better or worse! (Anyone else still get angry at those fools for burning it down? No? Just me?)
I thought Claudia showing the fallout of Leia’s heritage was a fabulous idea, and is the kind of thing I wish we saw more of- fallout from the original trilogy. And the Long Way To A Small Angry Planet- I just love that book. 🙂
Most of these books are fantasy and/or science fiction, I guess (and that’s because all the titles sound so magical and intriguing)! These sound like great books, though regrettably I haven’t read any. I have to say The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet does sound interesting! Interesting list!
Great list! I love The Fifth Season and The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, so I’m glad to see you enjoyed them, and Temeraire and The Great Library series are books I need to get to! 🙂
