I didn’t do any close out posts in December as I had a ton of things happen right at the end of the year and just didn’t have the time or energy to get them all done. So why not start off the year with a bit of reflection on the past year’s reading!
Favorite Sci-Fi
Thrawn by Timothy Zahn – This has been my favorite Star Wars novel thus far, and there have been a few really good ones. This one brings back a fan favorite from the old EU and explores his introduction to the Empire. (Review)
Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel – I read (or listened to rather) Sleeping Giants in a single day. It’s an engrossing read that threw a lot of curveballs at me that I wasn’t expecting. I loved the epistolary style and the varied cast of characters. (Review)
Favorite Fantasy
Age of Myth by Micahel J. Sullivan – This is my first Sullivan novel, despite owning several on my Kindle, and it was fantastic. He has some really excellent skills when it comes to world building and providing character you truly come to care for. Can’t wait to listen to Age of Swords. (Review)
Favorite Contemporary
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas – This was an extremely powerful read, especially with the social climate we are in.
Favorite Non-Fiction
Women in Sports: 50 Fearless Athletes Who Played to Win by Rachel Ignotfsky – This is a gorgeously illustrated book that highlights women in all manner of sports who are among the pioneers and the best. (Review)
Favorite Graphic Novel
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson – I adore books that focus on the villains and this was right up my alley. It starts off kind of cutesy and hilarious, but as you progress we get depth and character development. We see someone struggling to find their place in the world, we see friendships lost and gained, and we see the struggle to be the person you want to be vs what you feel you need to be. (Review)
Favorite Manga
Fullmetal Alchemist – I finished a few manga series this year, but this one blew all the others out of the water. It has everything; action, the feels, and plenty of surprises along the way. It’s certainly to be a favorite for life. .
I like how you chose categories. I really liked Sleeping Giants, THUG, and Nimona. Happy 2018!
I keep seeing the hate you give! Gotta get my hands on it.
I need to get back into the Sleeping Giants series. And Age of Myth was actually one of my favorite covers of last year- just looks so epic!
Nice! I really need read The Hate U Give.
I loved The Hate U Give, too! I have Sleeping Giants and Nimona. I will probably be getting to them soon. 📚
