Read Play Blog #5 – Favorite Sci-Fi Game

Read Play Blog is a meme about video games and books, posted every 16th of the month. Bloggers are encouraged to answer a discussion question, and recommend a video game that is similar to a book they liked. Hosted by Happy Indulgence Books & Read Me Away.

This month’s topic is: What is your Favorite Sci-Fi Game?

There is absolutely no hesitation when I tell you that my all time favorite sci-fi game is:

In truth it’s the whole franchise that I love, but if I had to pick one of the three then it would definitely be the second one. Other games come close, like Assassin’s Creed, but they don’t activate the rabid fangirl in me the way a Mass Effect game can.

I never played the first game, and I jumped right into the second one after getting a free PC copy for purchasing Dragon Age: Origins. I played it as much as I could but my dumb laptop could barely handle all of the awesomeness so I broke down and bought a 360 copy…and I haven’t turned back since.

To put it mildly, I fell in love.

I’m a big fan of choice base RPGs like this and I’ve never played a shooter with this element before ME2. Shepard became the badass chick I’ve always wanted to be. I always pick solder class because I firmly believe in being prepared for every situation. Need to kill a highly advanced AI? Assault rifle with some Disruptor ammo. Want to set someone on fire? Incendiary ammo. Need to shot something really really big? Rocket launcher…or sniper rifle since those are kind of large and you can only carry one.  Run out of ammo in one gun? Switch to one of the other 5 you have strapped to your back. Of course there are the other classes like Adept, Infiltrator, Sentinel, etc.

It’s Personal

You can be who you want to be. First you get the character creation screen, which is your basic run of the mill ‘make you’re own’ type system. Then you get to choose your background like where you grew up, why you’re in the military, etc. Then there are also the dialogue options. If you’re more into being a nice person all around and have a pretty set moral compass, then you can choose options geared toward that type of person. Or if you like to tell people the truth in the most frank way possible and your moral compass is set to “whatever benefits me” there are options for you too. I’m more of a middle range person, I play my actual personality so there is a whole lot of renegade with a few glowing moments where I pretend I’m the most well behaved person in space.

The romances are so well done in this series, and you truly find yourself gravitating towards members of your crew. Each game has romance options for you, most of them are returning characters so you can carry over your save data and keep the romance going in each game. You can woo them to the point of wanting a family (though you are here to save the galaxy so put the wedding dress/tux away) or you can love ’em and leave em’.

You have a lot of options as well. You have female and males, humans and aliens. Some people are exclusively straight and others are bsexual, so no need to conform to the miniscule options you would normally get. There is also a personality type for everyone.

Garrus Vakarian you have my heart. (If you haven’t played the game and you’re weirded out by the fact that he’s a giant alien bird-bug…play it. If you fall in love with a human in the game you’re in the minority, lol). If you have played the game check out why Garrus is the best (Buzzfeed)

So you want depth instead of just some action game? You’re in luck! You get to learn all about the different planets you’re trying to save (or are too late to save), the history and culture of each alien race, how the science works, the history of the more mysterious places, and all of the characters have depth. The best part is you can choose to learn this stuff or not, only the things that are directly related to your missions are given to you without option.

All Around Fantastic Franchise

Recommendation – Mass Effect series

There are 3, and I do recommend starting with the first one.

Did you think I was going to recommend something else after I wrote half a book telling you all the cool stuff you can do? Plus you might as well get sucked into it now, so when the new game comes out sometime in the future you’ll be ready for it. It won’t be Shepard related though.

Currently Playing – Mass Effect  & Assassin’s Creed Unity

(Xbox 360 & Xbox One respectively)

Mass Effect

This is my first time playing through this game and I’m loving it, of course. Also it was pure coincidence that this topic came up while I was playing this. I do recommend starting with this one since you get the full story, and it’s by no means a ‘bad’ first game.

Assassin’s Creed Unity

Ubisoft has been on my bad side this year, but I’m not ready to give them up quite yet. I love the storylines for these games so I’m ready to take on the French Revolution!

UPDATE: Oh dear god…ubisoft why?! So far the storyline is pretty good, which is the reason i’ve adored the franchise for so long but the amount of bugs and glitches I’ve run into makes this seem like this is the first game Ubisoft has ever put out like this. If I’m not getting stuck on buildings (or furniture), leaping like the most agile flying squirrel, or leaping off of buildings randomly…then I’m falling through the ground, getting stuck inside of haybales, or mashing buttons trying not to die when the controls no longer respond. (Hint…I die a lot. More than I have ever died in an AC game so far)

  1. Woohoo, I thought a lot of people would choose Mass Effect this month! I just love how this series carries on throughout the full 3 games which is pretty amazing, and I like the character choice and the romances. I actually played Shepherd as a male character (he’s sexy LOL) and wooed the blue alien girl who I know is a popular choice. I have still to play the 2nd and 3rd in the series though but I know it will be awesome! Great post Michelle!

  2. I seriously have to play this game sometime, haha! It sounds so cool, and I have friends who absolutely love it. :O

    Thanks for participating in RPB!
