Read Play Blog (1) – Preferred Gaming Platform

Read Play Blog is a meme about video games and books, posted every 16th of the month. Bloggers are encouraged to answer a discussion question, and recommend a video game that is similar to a book they liked. Hosted by Happy Indulgence Books & Read Me Away.

So I just discovered a new meme by  Happy Indulgence Books & Read Me Away that is pretty much perfect for my life! Books and games are the two things I spend the most money on every year. This post is a bit of a ‘catch up’ post since I’ve missed two prior to this week’s post.

Week 1 – How did you get into gaming?

I’ve been a gamer as long as I can remember. We had a Nintendo Entertainment System (thanks in part to my older brother) and I remember going into his room (where I wasn’t allowed), popping in the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cartridge and losing myself to it. I think I was around 3 at the time. Fun fact: My first cuss word was due to Super Mario Bros…and I’m pretty sure I was like 3 or 4 then too. When we got the N64, the NES went to my grandmother’s house where I spent most of my time while my parents were at work. So it was all mine from then on, plus having the N64 at home meant I had a constant stream of games to play. My dad also had a PC where I would watch him play Doom, Tomb Raider or Wolfenstien and occasionally I would sneak on when he was at work and play them myself. One of my favorite games to play on the PC was a Nascar game, where I would immediately turn my car around and try to wreck the other drivers. I was a strange kid…

Recommendation for New Gamers –  Flower

This is only for the Playstation Systems unfortunately

Flower is a beautiful game with a fairly simple concept, you are the wind and you’re trying to make the world a beautiful place. As you flow along you will begin to pick up flower petals, the more petals the better and the more you do the more life you bring the environment. This isn’t a game about skill, instead it’s meant to invoke emotions. Definitely a favorite of mine.

Week 2 – What is your favorite gaming genre?

RPGs all the way!

I am a sucker for a good RPG, and I will waste a ton of hours on a well made one. Games like Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon, Zelda, and Jade Empire were the reason for the devotion I have to the genre. Jade Empire was also the beginning of my love affair with Bioware (hullo Mass Effect, Old Republic, & Dragon Age). Then there is Bethesda…who I also have a love affair with (don’t tell Bioware). I have wasted so much of my life avoiding paths and climbing mountains in Skyrim, and I haven’t even beaten the story line yet. 183 hours and I haven’t beaten the story line…THIS IS MY LIFE. If you look at my game play hours almost all of the hefty numbers will be RPGs. I love the details, the stories, and the connections you forge with this fictional characters.

Recommendation RPG –Skyrim

Skyrim is easy to pick up and easy to get lost in, which is my favorite thing about RPGs this size. Sure you can blaze through the storyline, BUT wouldn’t you rather become the leader of the Thieves Guild? Or the Black Brotherhood? How about become a werewolf or a vampire? Oh…and you can learn these awesome magic words that literally freak everyone out when you yell them. The controls are pretty simple and there is a ton to do, with no pressure to do it. Don’t feel like fighting? Go make some potions or armor. Additionally you can play the previous games in the Elder Scrolls, but it’s not necessary.

Week 3 – Preferred Gaming Platform

Console, specifically Xbox 360/One

I have boxes of consoles, so it’s no surprise that I’m pretty much devoted to console games. I love PC games, but most of the time I can’t afford to have the best computer so game don’t run as well as I would like on the PC. So I stick with consoles and they treat me well…most of the time. I just got an Xbox One as an early (super early) christmas present so I have both my 360 and One set up on my tv stand.

I don’t play on Playstations much anymore because of the smooth frame rate that they display on, I end up with migraines because of it. Games look amazing on it, but nothing is worth a migraine.

Recommendation, Xbox Only Game – Fable 2

Fable was a fantastic game on the original Xbox, but for me Fable II is the game that shines in this series. It ironed out the kinks from the first game, added in some more elements that we wanted (and a few we didn’t), and it was a solid addition to the franchise. Fable III…it was great until it wasn’t…and I mean it flopped fairly hard after a certain point. So Fable II is the one I’m sticking by, if you enjoy RPGs with more choices left up to you then this is the way to go. You get a lot of adventure, some action portions, and more than few mysteries to unravel.

Currently Playing – Tomb Raider, The Definitive Edition

Tomb Raider has been around for a long time and the newest game is the Reboot that the series truly deserved. I am completely addicted to this game right now and I’ve only had it for 3 days. It still feels like an older Tomb Raider game, though it does have much better controls and a lot fewer glitches. The graphics are stunning on any system and the story is right on par with the Tomb Raider style.

There are plenty of collectables to find and challenges to conquer, and there are no re-hash mission. There is always something new to see and the puzzles are still as fun as the older games. There is also a multiplayer game which is 2 to 8 players which I haven’t had teh chance to try out but it seems fairly basic as far as multiplayer matches go.

It’s rare that I get this passionate over a game so to me that speaks for its quality.

  1. I am not a gamer but I do love to watch and couldn’t get enough when my kids played Kingdom Hearts

  2. Tomb Raider! I have so many memories of that game, and the newest one looks absolutely amazing. I have to get around to playing it, and I know I’ll be feeling a rush of nostalgia all the way through. 😀

    Thanks for participating, Michelle!

  3. Thanks for joining our meme Michelle! Glad to hear you started young as a gamer, pretty much sounds like me playing on the computer when my older brother wasn’t around LOL! I have just started playing Skyrim as well and man, I am so addicted. Hearing that you have put 183 hours in it and still haven’t finished story mode, well that’s exactly what I would do because I’m a total completionist. MUST DO ALL SIDE QUESTS lol.

I was recommended Tomb Raider from the bf, he said I should play it because the newest one is quite a cinematic game.

Congrats on getting an Xbone! RPGS are definitely ones that I have enjoyed ever since I was young too.

This is a great meme. I remember growing up with Super Mario Bros- my sister and I would try to make each other fall or get killed. Nice huh? And the driving games- you’re not the only one. I never played NASCAR but there was a game where the cops chase you or whatever… I loved going the wrong way and just smashing into cars and causing general chaos. Great stress reliever… 🙂

I love RPG’s and Bioware but Skyrim is the game I have really wanted to try, and just have not taken the plunge yet. I’ve heard it’s SO immersive and you can just do whatever you want, wander around and explore, which I really like. I really need to get that game.

    • Lol, that definitely sounds like what me and my cousins were doing in games like Halo. We’d constantly stick plasma grenades to each other’s back or face. I completely recommend Skyrim, it’s so much fun and capable of being incredibly laid back or immersive.

Thank you for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed it, leave a comment and tell me what you think.
